Designing and developing the institutional web presence for the Centre for African Public AI.

CAPAI needed a digital platform that commanded immediate respect from government officials, academic researchers, and international tech partners. The site needed to handle complex policy documents, fellowship applications, and research publications while remaining exceptionally fast and accessible globally.

We opted for a modern, static-first architecture to guarantee speed and security, prioritizing clean typography and a professional, muted design language that let the research and policy initiatives take center stage.

We architected the platform using Next.js, leveraging its static site generation (SSG) capabilities to ensure maximum performance and security—critical requirements for an organization interfacing with government bodies. We designed a modular component library using Tailwind CSS, establishing a cohesive visual identity that feels both modern and deeply institutional.
The development process involved creating structured templates for various content types: research papers, press releases, fellowship cohort announcements, and policy frameworks. We ensured that the typography (utilizing optimized web fonts) and spacing provided an excellent reading experience for long-form academic and policy content across all devices.
Accessibility was a core focus. We implemented strict semantic HTML, proper contrast ratios, and keyboard navigation support to ensure the platform is accessible to all users, regardless of their location or bandwidth constraints.
Outcome
We delivered a highly performant, secure, and easily maintainable institutional platform. The architecture provides CAPAI with a solid foundation to scale their digital initiatives, publish research efficiently, and manage international applications for their public AI fellowships.
