Building a Scalable Global Tours Marketplace
An in-depth look at the architectural decisions and growth strategies behind the Travelipa travel marketplace.
Challenge
The travel industry is highly fragmented, with independent tour operators struggling to gain global visibility while travelers face friction in discovering and booking authentic local experiences. The challenge was building a centralized, high-performance marketplace capable of handling complex inventory, multi-currency payments, and vendor management from day one.
Approach
We approached the platform with a dual focus on technical robustness for the vendors and a frictionless, SEO-optimized experience for the end-user. This meant selecting a modern edge-ready tech stack and designing a scalable database architecture before writing a single line of frontend code.
Technology
Work Completed
The foundation of Travelipa was built on a PostgreSQL database managed via Supabase, allowing us to structure complex relational data—connecting users, vendors, bookings, reviews, and geographic locations efficiently. We developed a custom vendor dashboard that allows local operators to manage their inventory, set dynamic pricing based on seasons, and review booking histories without requiring technical knowledge.
For the booking flow, we implemented Stripe Connect. This was a critical architectural decision, as it allows the platform to automatically split payments at the point of transaction, routing funds directly to the vendor while holding the platform fee. This eliminated the massive administrative overhead of manual vendor payouts.
On the frontend, we utilized React and Tailwind CSS to create a highly responsive, map-centric interface powered by Mapbox, allowing users to visually explore activities in their destination.
Outcome
We developed a solid architectural foundation capable of scaling across multiple regions. The technical SEO structure implemented ensures that destination-specific landing pages are primed for search engine indexing, capturing long-tail travel intent. By streamlining the vendor onboarding process and automating financial splits, we structured a platform that can grow its inventory organically while maintaining low operational overhead.
